After some VERY CONFUSING conversations with Idaho Health and Welfare, I *think* (?) I sort of maybe understand some things.
The upshot is that it’s verboten to mix healthcare insurance states between spouses in most instances, like matter and anti-matter. Oh and there are more areas of confusion. Like for example, if your personal worplace-provided insurance will cost you a lot — over 10% of your salary — you can choose to use the exchange instead. However, if your work insurance is affordable but your spouse’s is very expensive, there are no options for you: you both must choose your workplace insurance (unless you’re able to use Medicaid or COBRA for your spouse).
Without further ado, here is a matrix you can use to make decisions. Jesus. Healthcare is so broken in this country.
IDAHO HEALTHCARE MARRIAGE MATRIX
Spouse A | Spouse B | Is this combo Allowed? |
Healthcare Exchange | Medicaid |
NO |
Workplace Insurance | Healthcare Exchange |
NO |
A job whose insurance costs are > 10% of income, so they instead choose Healthcare Exchange | Healthcare Exchange |
YES |
A job whose insurance costs for THEM are < 10% of income, but whose spousal costs would be much higher | Healthcare Exchange |
STILL NO |
COBRA | Medicaid |
YES |
Medicaid | Medicaid |
YES |
